Canadian Government Invests in Atlantic Province Companies

Aug 9th, 2013 Cheticamp, NB

The Cheticamp Marine Centre has received $1 million in project funding to offer inspection and repair services to marine traffic across Atlantic Canada and Iles-de-la-Madeleine. The federal loan will also provide haul-out and storage of large commercial and recreational vessels — the only boat lift of its kind on the western coast of Cape Breton.

According to Angus LeFort, president of the Conseil economique de Cheticamp: “It’s a very important project for this area. It’s going to create jobs for this area hopefully. Any type of investment of that sort is very welcome in this community.”

The project is to build and upgrade two 60-metre piers to accommodate the huge marine travel lift and an large building where Cheticamp Boatbuilders Ltd. will conduct repair work on vessels.

Federal Transport Minister Lisa Raitt, made several funding announcements on behalf of Rob Moore, the minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency.

The Cheticamp River Atlantic Salmon Association, which is a community-based stewardship group mandated to enhance the salmon fishing experience in the Cheticamp area, also received almost $95,000 to develop a detailed habitat management and restoration plan for wild Atlantic salmon in the Cheticamp River watershed. The funds will also be used to implement two priority restoration projects for the association.

ACOA also gave $18,750 to L’Association des radios communautaires en Atlantique, which represents francophone community radio stations in Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador. The funds will be used to develop websites and social media platforms for its various members as well as for the association itself so the group can better promote member programs and services.
